CCTV at The Downs Primary and Nursery.

To ensure the safety and security of our students, staff, and visitors, The Downs Primary School and Nursery operates Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras around the school premises. The use of CCTV helps us to deter and detect incidents such as unauthorised access, vandalism, and other safety concerns.

Compliance with GDPR and Data Protection Laws

We take your privacy seriously and fully comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and relevant data protection legislation. The CCTV system is managed in accordance with the following principles:

  • Purpose Limitation: CCTV footage is recorded solely to enhance security and protect individuals and property within the school grounds.

  • Data Minimisation: Cameras are positioned only in public or communal areas; no recording occurs in private areas such as classrooms or toilets.

  • Lawful Basis: The lawful basis for processing CCTV footage is our legitimate interest in maintaining a safe and secure environment.

  • Data Retention: Recorded footage is retained only for a limited period, typically 30 days, after which it is securely deleted unless required for an ongoing investigation.

  • Access and Security: Access to CCTV footage is strictly limited to authorised personnel. 

Information for Parents and Guardians

In line with GDPR requirements, we inform parents and guardians that:

  • CCTV is in operation on school grounds to safeguard children and staff.

  • Images captured may be used as evidence in investigations related to school safety, behaviour incidents, or criminal activity.

  • Parents have the right to request access to CCTV footage concerning their child under the GDPR, subject to certain exemptions.

  • Any concerns about the use of CCTV or data protection practices can be raised with the school's Data Protection Officer Mrs N Cooper at admin@downsschool.com.

By maintaining transparency and adhering to data protection laws, The Downs Primary School and Nursery ensures that CCTV is used responsibly and respectfully to support the well-being of our school community.
